Best rum for a Mojito

What to look for in a rum for a Mojito, the classic recipe, and a Beach Heaven twist with Lychee Bliss.

Best rum for a Mojito

Looking for the best rum for a Mojito? You want a light, clean rum that lets mint and lime stay fresh. Traditionally that means white rum. A lightly fruity rum adds a new layer without hiding the mint.

The Mojito comes from Cuba and is built from white rum, fresh lime juice, sugar, mint and soda water. The International Bartenders Association recipe uses 40 ml white rum, 30 ml fresh lime juice, 6 mint leaves and 2 teaspoons of sugar, topped with soda water over crushed ice.

Mint and lime are delicate, so choose a smooth, light-bodied rum with no heavy oak or sweetness. It should taste good on its own, because a Mojito is simple and has nowhere to hide.

Lychee Bliss is built around ripe lychee, with lemon, lime, cucumber and ginger notes. Those flavours sit naturally with mint and lime, which makes it a good fit for a Mojito. This is a serving suggestion, not a classic recipe.

Press the mint gently with the lime juice and syrup, pour in Lychee Bliss, fill with crushed ice, stir from the bottom up and top with soda water. Finish with a mint sprig.

Press the mint, never shred it. Use fresh lime juice and crushed ice, and add a little more ice on top at the end.
